The Florida Panthers have named former Amazon and Disney executive Michael White as the team’s new president of business operations, the organization announced Tuesday. White steps into the role previously held by Matthew Caldwell, who departed in August to become the CEO of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx.
In his new position, White will oversee all business operations for the four facilities managed by the Panthers: Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, the Baptist Health IcePlex, the Panthers IceDen in Coral Springs, and the FTL War Memorial Auditorium. He was formally introduced at a news conference at Amerant Bank Arena before the Panthers' game against the Ottawa Senators.
The hiring marks a significant move for the franchise, bringing in an executive with a deep background in consumer technology, product development, and customer experience from outside the traditional world of professional sports management.
A new focus on innovation and experience
Panthers owner Michael Viola expressed his confidence in the appointment, highlighting White's extensive experience with globally recognized brands as a key factor in the decision.
We are thrilled to welcome Michael White to our Panthers family. After a diligent and comprehensive search, we are confident that Michael is the right fit to lead our organization into continued success. He brings to our club a proven record in consumer experience, partnership growth and product development for some of the world’s most successful companies and invaluable capabilities of organizational leadership and visionary innovation. Michael will play a key role in our next phase of growth as we work to deliver memorable experiences for sports and entertainment fans.
Before joining the Panthers, White served for two years as the Chief Product Officer at Zoox, Amazon's autonomous vehicle subsidiary. There, he was responsible for consumer strategy, go-to-market plans, and business development for the world's first purpose-built autonomous robotaxi. His work included designing an AI-powered customer experience and developing commercial partnerships, skills that are directly transferable to the modern sports and entertainment landscape.
White's resume also includes an eleven-year tenure at The Walt Disney Company in various senior positions, three years with the Apollo Group, and a decade at Yahoo, where he served for two years as senior director of strategy and technology. This diverse background in tech and entertainment signals a strategic direction for the Panthers, emphasizing innovation as the franchise looks to build on its recent commercial and on-ice success.

Building on a successful foundation
White inherits the leadership of a business operation that has seen record growth. His predecessor, Matthew Caldwell, was with the organization since 2014, serving as COO before his promotion to president and CEO in 2016. During his tenure, the Panthers achieved new highs in ticket sales, television viewership, and sponsorship revenue. The demand for tickets has grown so strong that the team now has a substantial waiting list for season tickets, a testament to both the team's performance and the front office's business acumen.
Caldwell also played a crucial role in securing the franchise's long-term future in Broward County through strategic arena lease negotiations. His leadership was instrumental in the development of team-operated facilities like the FTL War Memorial and the successful hosting of the franchise's first-ever outdoor game on January 2 at loanDepot park, the home of the Miami Marlins.
The appointment of an executive from the tech industry is part of a broader trend in sports, where teams are increasingly viewing themselves as entertainment companies competing for consumer attention in a crowded marketplace. In South Florida, the Panthers contend with other major league teams and large-scale events like the Miami Grand Prix. White’s expertise in creating unique customer experiences at Disney and leveraging technology at Zoox and Yahoo will be pivotal in keeping the fan experience fresh and engaging.
A history of dynamic leadership
The role of president has a history of high-profile leadership for the Panthers. Michael Yormark held the position for 11 years before departing in 2014 to become the President and Chief of Branding and Strategy at Roc Nation, the entertainment company founded by Jay Z. Yormark’s successor, Caldwell, then guided the team through a period of significant commercial expansion.
The front office has also made a point of incorporating different perspectives, including those of former players. In 2017, the team hired former player Shawn Thornton as a business executive, demonstrating a model that blends corporate experience with deep hockey knowledge. White's hiring continues this trend of bringing in specialized expertise to drive the business forward.
As the Florida Panthers continue their quest for a Stanley Cup, the business side of the organization under White will focus on translating on-ice success into sustainable, long-term growth. His focus will likely be on leveraging technology to enhance every aspect of the fan journey, from ticket purchase to in-arena experience, solidifying the Panthers' position as a premier sports and entertainment brand in South Florida.
